Discover the art of capturing the human face. This workshop offers an efficient and naturalistic approach to portrait drawing — deepening your understanding of facial structure, anatomy, and expression.
Malone Alexander Samuels is a full-time professional artist who has taught visual arts in public, private, and parochial schools for over fifteen years. Malone conducts various art workshops and frequently lectures artist organizations.

Malone earned his Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree, Magna cum Laude, from the Maryland Institute College of Art in Baltimore, Maryland. He attended the American University in Washington, D.C. on a full-tuition fellowship and received his Master of Fine Arts Degree with the Honor of Distinction.
Malone earned his Graduate Diploma from the Joe Kubert School of Cartoon and Graphic Art located in Dover, New Jersey where he became the first student in that institution’s history to receive a national award from the New York Society of Illustrators. His winning artwork was published in the Society of Illustrators 32nd Annual of American Illustration. Malone received international recognition when he was selected the 2001 Outstanding Graduate of the Year by the Art Instruction Schools, Inc.

Malone Samuels’ fine arts have been represented in noted galleries and numerous art exhibitions. Malone also enjoys fulfilling portrait painting assignments, another artistic pursuit for which he has received wide recognition.

His commissioned commercial artwork has appeared as book covers and interior illustrations for book publications such as Global Peace Lovers, Teacher of the Year, Dubbya’s Wing, and White Knuckle Rides, to name a few. Also, Malone has created the animatics for a medical video, has produced artwork for comic books, and has created advertising illustrations which have appeared in the Washingtonian Magazine, the Yellow Pages, as well as numerous other publications.

In addition to his visual artwork, Malone is a published author and has contributed poetry to literary anthologies.

2-Day Workshop's Schedule

Day 2 — Sunday, October 12,
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
On Day 2, you’ll apply your knowledge to create a complete portrait drawing. Together we will:

  • Build the portrait step by step from sketch to finish
  • Apply anatomy and proportion to achieve likeness
  • Explore shading, depth, and naturalistic rendering
  • Focus on individuality and expression
  • Receive one-on-one feedback and critique

You will finish Day 2 with a completed portrait that reflects both accuracy and artistic vision.
2-Day

Schedule
Day 1 —
Saturday, October 11,
12:00 pm – 4:00 pm
The first day is dedicated to anatomy and the study of individual features. With demonstrations and guided practice, you will:

  • Learn proportions of the head and overall facial structure
  • Study the anatomy of the skull and muscles that define expression
  • Practice drawing the eyes, nose, mouth, ears, and hair as separate studies
  • Strengthen observation and accuracy through targeted exercises

By the end of Day 1, you’ll have a strong anatomical foundation and a set of detailed feature studies.
Day 2 —
Sunday, October 12,
1:00 pm – 5:00 pm
On Day 2, you’ll apply your knowledge to create a complete portrait drawing. Together we will:
